Herculaneum, smaller than Pompeii, but better preserved. There are beautiful Frescos here, and many two story buildings remain. Vesuvius in the distance.

There are many of these in the ancient cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum, Italy. Here citizens could purchase cooked food to be eaten ‘on the go’ or at home. Pompeii was destroyed in 79 AD by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius two thousand years ago.

The ancient city of Pompeii, Italy. Destroyed in 79 AD by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius and buried in volcanic Ash. Today the excavated ruins, allow visitors an amazing glimpse into life here two thousand years ago.

Just one of the many streets of Pompeii Here there would have been shops, houses, and much more! Vesuvius can be seen in the distance.

Of all the sights at Pompeii, this one moved me most. Plaster casts, some of little children, a sombre reminder of the Human cost.
